Unpeeled Returns to DINA With Performance From Internationally Renowned Bass Clarinettist.

Uncategorised
This Friday night DINA is delighted to host a performance by internationally renowned solo bass clarinettist Sarah Watts, as part of the Unpeeled programme of concerts, sound installations and talks showcasing women in music technology. Unpeeled has been devised by SONA, a Sheffield-based group which fosters skills, creates space, generates networks, and forges collaboration to support women in learning and experimenting with sound and music practices. SONA co-founder Deborah Egan first saw Sarah perform during the opening programme of the Centre for New Music in Sheffield, and decided she would be the perfect fit for an Unpeeled event. Deborah said: “I was drawn to the concert as Sarah was performing with contrabass clarinet, a huge instrument that sits two octaves below the standard tuning. “Sarah was playing with pre-prepared electronic…

Review: Reel Femme No.8 – showcasing a staggeringly broad range of female filmmaking

Art, Press, Slider
For its eighth screening, Reel Femme returned to DINA with an array of short films created by self-identifying women filmmakers with the theme of ‘land and sea’. Such a broad topic allowed the audience to engage with a variety of genres, subject matters and filmmaking styles, all of which resulted in a surprising and entertaining evening.    While ‘land and sea’ was an apt theme for the film night, ‘seclusion’ seemed to be at the core of most of the pieces shown, no matter their format or narrative. Amongst the three animated shorts, the stop motion animation, Bottle, was a standout. Created by Kirsten Lepore, the mind behind the Internet hit, ‘Hi Stranger’, this short film was shot on location. Or rather, three distinct locations: a beach, in snow and…

DARK HUMOURED APOCALYPTIC POETRY BOOK SET FOR LAUNCH AT DINA

Uncategorised
DOOM POP POETRY with an apocalyptic edge comes to DINA this Tuesday as we herald the book launch of Suzannah Evans’ debut collection ‘Near Future.’ Described as a darkly humorous journey through sci-fi lullabies and northern mysteries, Suzannah’s work brings a distinctive, skilful and wonderfully peculiar roving eye to our restless and unpredictable times. As a teenager, Suzannah had an obsessive fear of the apocalypse which has informed and inspired many of her poems, and she still doesn’t know whether it’s best to plan responsibly for the future or party like it’s 1999. Suzannah is the winner of a Gladstone's Library residency for 2019 with this new collection. Our doors will open from 7pm for this end-of-the-world party to remember, which features readings from the book and poets Helen Mort…

Artist Who Uses The Power Of Drawing To Improve Her Life To Have Work Exhibited

The work of an artist who uses drawing as self-therapy to help her through past traumas is to be shown in an exhibition opening this Thursday. “Help Me Find A Way Out” is the first time the artwork of Barbara Brookes has been shown to the public, and will be on display at The Cellar Theatre on Backfields from 8-14 November. Barbara has been drawing for 20 years, however it was a chance meeting in Foodhall public dining room on Eyre Street that attracted the attention of her work, leading it to be published. Miriam Schechter, co-founder of The Cellar Theatre and a volunteer at Foodhall said: “I was running a project at Foodhall called the Open Journal, which is a quarterly publication that is open to anyone in the…
