The Cellar at DINA gets ready for launch

The Cellar at DINA gets ready for launch

Uncategorised
Nine months ago, a group of our hearty band of volunteers at DINA, came up with an idea to turn the wrecked beer cellar here into a working theatre space. It was met with many obstacles along the way, but nous and sheer graft have made that a reality as The Cellar at DINA tantalisingly awaits its launch night on Wednesday July 18. Joey Winson spoke to Miriam Schechter, one of the new venue’s founders, about the journey of The Cellar, what’s in store for the launch night and its future. We last chatted with Miriam in February as our venue’s old beer cellar, once a disorderly, unloved and forgotten relic in the grand scheme of DINA, was slowly but surely starting to see a dream being realised as a…

Dina was mentioned in a guardian article about the sites to visit in Sheffield After a morning stroll, stop for lunch at Dina Diner, a vegetarian and vegan cafe attached to a music, comedy, poetry and theatre venue that is a social enterprise and platform for emerging artists. Dina is an example of what I like about most of Sheffield’s creative spaces: the really thoughtful curation Read the full article here - https://www.theguardian.com/discover-the-uk/2018/jun/13/48-hours-in-sheffield-a-locals-guide

It’s time to get skanking this Sunday with Jungle Lion!

It’s time to get skanking this Sunday with Jungle Lion!

Jungle Lion, an 11-piece Ska band who have taken over Sheffield with their monumental stage presence, are going to be performing this Sunday at DINA. (Doors at 8pm, £2 entry!) Dave Campbell, the founder of Jungle Lion, has disclosed a bit more about the band and their rise to success. How was the Jungle Lion created? Before Jungle Lion, I spent a few years working in a band which did the working men’s club circuit. We played ska but it wasn’t a big band and I got to thinking that it would be nice not be tied to just one circuit. That band came to an end in 2007. I had a break for a while and then started putting Jungle Lion together. It took us over a year of…

DINA to welcome “visually stunning” play to Sheffield

DINA to welcome “visually stunning” play to Sheffield

Slider, Uncategorised
Bringing ‘lyrical magic’ to Sheffield this May will be the ‘visually stunning’ play, Honey, produced by the Reaction Theatre Makers. The Malvern-based theatre company have been preparing for their national tour, having already established glowing support for their play in the Worcestershire hills. Honey gave audiences a glimpse into a rural Welsh community, where a fraying family have been trying to stitch together a quilt, which eloquently mirrors the patchwork nature of the narrative. The meditative writing absorbed those watching into the internal dialogues of a boy with autism, his mother, her tattoo-artist sister and their estranged half-sibling in their struggle to deal with missing a part of their family, creating a gentle but profound drama. Written and directed by Tiffany Hosking, the play’s use of minimalistic staging completely entranced…

Good day to you! DINA Digest is back with a round-up of what's going on this week. However, first we must have a look back to last weekend and give a huge thanks to everyone who came down to Barang on Saturday, the crew who make it happen and the fantastic DJs on the night, big up to headliner Samedia Shabeen who made it down all the way from Edinburgh! The Beast From The East was tamed by the fire on the dancefloor on yet another great night, we hope everyone got home all right afterwards! Barang! will be back in what we sincerely hope will be a much more welcoming climate on June 2. So on to this week, and tonight (Thursday May 22), Wordlife returns with its night…

Introducing A New Space For Theatre: The Cellar At DINA

Introducing A New Space For Theatre: The Cellar At DINA

Slider, Uncategorised
DINA are proud to announce we are housing a new project which transforms a rather neglected part of our building into Sheffield’s newest fringe theatre. Joey Winson spoke to Miriam Schechter, one of the team behind The Cellar at DINA, about how the idea came about and their plans for the space’s launch. The four spaces we have at DINA all have a little quirk about them or a particular backstory. The Café, the home of DINA Diner, was part of The Cutler pub. Next to that is the long bar on the we know as The Spoon Factory, as its guise before being part of a pub was entwined with Sheffield’s steel history as… yes you guessed it. Upstairs is mainly taken up by what was the 70s in…

A look forward to Barang! Global Adventures In Bass

Uncategorised
Playing a multitude of genres from South African House to Soca to UK Bass, Barang! is a club night which dubs itself “Global Adventures In Bass.” It is gaining a burgeoning reputation in the North of England for being a unique occasion, not just for the music but also for its atmosphere and that it features a pre-club three course dinner and cocktail evening, which not many club nights can boast of. Joey Winson met with Jack and Komarine from the Barang! collective as they prepare for their one-year birthday at DINA on December 16th, to find out more about how this one-of-a-kind night came to fruition. Sometimes fate has a canny knack of bringing people together with similar ideas and comparable tastes to eventually form a mighty project. Whilst…

A look back at November’s Reel Femme

Uncategorised
The fifth instalment of the Sheffield-based film night which celebrates female filmmakers came to the performance venue DINA, showcasing an international parade of short films on the theme of music (writes Diana Read) On a cold November evening, there were few places as comfortable as the film night’s venue as the cosy room was illuminated by candle light. The chatter coming from the people seated in a lose semi-circle around the projector faded as the screen lit up, displaying the name of the first film to amaze the audience that night.  Destiny. The title’s yellow letters were stark and bold, much like the film’s protagonist, a New York rapper named Destiny Nicole Frasqueri, aka Princess Nokia. The documentary, directed by Orian Barki, takes a close look at this musician of…
