Steel City Cinema:
For our second event and as Christmas is approaching, we are continuing our focus on LGBT cinema by screening Todd Haynes’ festive romance ‘Carol.’ Alongside screening the film, Steel City Cinema is also aiming to create an immersive event inspired by Christmas in 1950s New York where we hope to re-create a 1950s Manhattan Christmas in Sheffield.
We will be opening the doors 30 minutes before the film starts where you can chat and dance with your local community as we’ll be:
Playing both 1950s New York and Christmas music (Dean Martin, Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davies Jr, Screamin Jay Hawkins etc.) as doors open and before the film starts.
Projecting classic images of New York in the 1950s to set the tone of ‘Carol’ before the film starts
Providing festive treats such as hot refreshments and mince pies.
We’re also aiming to decorate the venue with iconic New York-inspired decor, fairy lights and will provide Santa Hats as adorned by Rooney Mara in the picture below. We’d also like to provide warm festive food but are currently debating the logistics.
As always, Steel City Cinema aims to be an all-inclusive environment that priorities broadening the cinema of marginalized communities. If you ever experience any discrimination or feel uncomfortable at an event, drop the page a message.
More details to follow in due course.
